6 Different Mattress Sizes - One Size Will Not Fit All
By Sandy Edwards
Whether you are moving into a new house and buying new furniture or just refitting an old room, you’ll find that one thing that you might need to think about is mattress sizes Before you head out to the furniture store, though, keep in mind the fact that you will have a variety of sizes to choose from. Take a look at the various mattress sizes in front of you, and make sure that you are familiar with all of them before you make a decision.
Twin or Single Twin mattresses measure 39″ x 75″, and they are most commonly seen as beds for children. They also make great daybeds and hideaways, and can be perfect for turning a study into a small guest bedroom without sacrificing much space at all.
Twin Extra Long These 39″ x 80″ mattresses are as wide as the normal twin beds, but the extra five inches in length can make all the difference when you are trying to comfortably accommodate an adult; these beds are very common in college dorms. Before you buy an extra long twin bed, keep in mind that it can be a little difficult to find sheets for them, as basic win beds tend to be more popular.
Double or Full Double mattresses measure 54″ x 75″, and they are generally meant for a couple sleeping together or one person who likes some room to roll around. When considering mattress sizes, remember that they are only as long as a basic twin bed, which can be an advantage if they are meant to fit into a studio or one bed room apartment.
Queen Taking a large leap in size, queen mattresses are 60″ x 80″, and they can be quite luxurious when you compare it to the room that is afforded in a double bed. Queen mattresses have six more inches of width and five more length than a double bed, and this can make for significantly more comfortable sleeping arrangements. Depending on where you are moving the mattress that you may need to consider how to move the queen sized mattress into the room
King King sized mattresses are the same length as a queen sized, but give you another 16 inches in width, giving two people sleeping in them quite a bit of elbow room. This is the largest width commonly available, and these mattresses will quite comfortably sleep two large adults. Make sure that you know how to get the mattress where it is going and to keep in mind things like stairs or narrow doorways.
California King This is the longest size in mattresses that is commonly found, and at 72″ x 84, this mattress is one that takes up a lot of space. For taller people, a California king-sized mattress might be the most comfortable, though once again, you will want to make sure that it will fit in the room that you are moving it into. For a quick size comparison, remember that it will require three normal pillows to span its width.
