It is an unfortunate fact that there is a steady increase in disputes over the realisation and distribution of assets following death. And this does not simply apply to families in which, for example, parties prefer not to marry or have step children. It remains a widespread fallacy that only those individuals who are aged or in poor health should concern themselves with a Will. Yet, regardless of whether you are poor or wealthy, you will have no power over what will happen to your assets when you die if you do not make a Will.

The only certain thing about life, as the cliché goes, is that it will come to an end. Without a Will, it is up to the Government to divide all assets up and this is done in accordance with exacting rules of intestacy. There are many cases where unmarried couples who have been living together for some time find themselves in a regrettable position because of this, usually due to a mistaken belief that the law will recognize their partner as a beneficiary despite the fact that they are unmarried. Equally, a great deal of grief and protracted anxiety can be brought upon a family due to a badly drafted will, or if the maker of the Will has not thought through the full consequences and ramifications of the Will they have made, whether it is due to illness or other reasons.

There are a wide range of reasons for an individual to contest the distribution of assets following a death. Some of the most common disputes arise from the deceased not making a Will, or, for example, when there is a Will but it does not make provision for all of nearest and dearest of the deceased and, as a result, individuals may feel aggrieved by their lack of inclusion within the Will. Disputes can also occur if Executors or Administrators of an estate do not handle the distribution of the estate efficiently.

If you were to find yourself in a position where you wanted to contest the validity of a will, then there are various grounds on which you can do this. Often, these will challenge either the deceased’s legal capacity or mental capacity to make a Will. Most importantly, there are time limits which must be adhered to for claims and certain categories of individuals who are able to make a claim. It is vital to seek advice at a very early stage if a claim is to be successful.

Even with the most recent money problems and the credit crunch, Christmas can still be achievable on a budget and will save you getting into any debt that is needless. Maybe one of the toughest challenges is buying a present for your parents, because mainly all parents normally have everything that they want, so inspiration is much needed on this part. Instead of buying for their house be more creative and think about what they would actually like for themselves, think about their hobbies as this will give you some initiative of what they could do with. However if you really are struggling and just don’t know what to buy, think about neutral gifts that will go down well such as an aftershave set, champagne set or even an experience day out, playing it safe is always the best way in this scenario.

Then you have to choose between high street shopping and online shopping, online shopping is without any doubt the relaxed and less stressful way to do your Christmas shopping because you won’t have to queue, battle with the crowds or haul about amounts of shopping bags back with you, you can simply sit in the comfort of your house and get all your presents delivered straight to your front door. Consumers are really starting to pay attention to “product shrink.” I first noticed it in my yogurt cup but thought oh well its less calories any way but lately I’m seeing a lot of different products shrinking yet the prices remain the same and in some cases shrinking product contents combined with increasing prices.

This isn’t the first time this has happened. If any of you have old cookbooks you will notice that the recommend amount of some of the products has changed. Especially when you are baking and you need one and a piece of something to complete the recipe. A cup of something is still however a cup so standard weights and measurements still apply.

We saw the shrinking of the detergent bottle (Ultra detergents) a while back along with the supposed claim of saving the environment with less packaging. The detergent is concentrated requiring less packaging material to make the bottle and less cost to ship it too. The real truth is however that it was a win for CPG companies and the packaging manufacturers not the consumer. You are actually paying more per wash with the new detergents rather than less. It looks good for the environmental packaging spin too.

But enough sour grapes on something that has become common place, packages are now shrinking to keep up with the cost of inflation. The price of raw materials is skyrocketing and companies are looking for ways to offset the increasing costs. One of the simplest ways is to reduce the amount of product inside while keeping the price the same hoping that consumers won’t notice.

Sorry, but we now have an educated customer that’s reading labels and taking notes. Not only are the reading them but they are comparing like products. Branded merchandise was already loosing ground to private label products, now even more so with the down turn in the economy. If your product shrinks and the consumer isn’t happy they WILL look for alternative especially if they are less expensive.

There are however other cost saving options as it relates to packaging. Some companies are doing what’s called “light-weighting”. That is reducing the amount of packaging material that’s used. I’m sure you seen how the thickness of your water bottles has decreased or how you can now squeeze your beer or soda can with one hand. That’s because the manufacturers have figured out a way to take out packaging material while still keeping the structural integrity of the package. Packaging technology has new and improved materials that makes this possible. Its important to note however, that there is a fine line between reducing material costs and the failure of the package. If it doesn’t get to the consumer in good condition then its a disaster.

Another way of reducing packaging costs is to re-configure the package to be more cost effective. That is to design a product in such a manner that it takes up less space on the store shelf or maximizes palletization and shipping or transportation by being a better shipping unit. A good example is the square milk bottle introduce by Wal-Mart where not only can the get more on the shelf a square bottle vs a round bottle but it also is more cost efficient shipping. This bottle redesign is a win for Wal-Mart considering the vast amount of money saved in making this change. A note of caution when contemplating a radical redesign of a common place item the jury is till out on consumer acceptance of the square milk bottle. Ever tried to pour one?

Considering consumer awareness of the incredible shrinking package a smart marketing person would be looking for ways to provide more value not less. Redesign, light-weighting or just simply keeping the product amount the same are all options in winning the hearts and minds in today’s consumer brand loyalty isn’t what it used to be and once they are gone they might never come back.

There are various factors that ensure that your self defense is ensured adequately with a pepper spray.

- Surprise the attacker: It is essential that you surprise the attacker b y pulling out the pepper spray at the right time. This should not be done too early or too late. If you pull out the pepper spray too early, you tend to warn the attacker about the fact that you are armed with a self defense product and therefore he has time to prepare his next move. At times many assailants carry a weapon without actually intending to use it. By bringing out your self defense product you may actually intimidate the attacker. This may incite him to actually use the weapon that he may be carrying only for ‘effect’. Taking out the pepper spray too late may not allow you to spray at the right time. This may result in a situation where you are physically confined or held and therefore may not be able to use the pepper spray properly.

- Be alert all the time: Another aspect of being able to time your attack with the pepper spray is to be alert at all times. The alertness allows you to judge the exact moment when you should reach out for the self defense product in your bag or pocket. Make sure that you have your eyes open and are not actually trying to wish the event away. Taking charge of the situation is extremely essential at this time.

- Distance: The distance between the attacker and you when you actually spray is also important. If you spray when he is too close to you can harm you and if you use the pepper spray when he is too far, it can result in the pepper spray not being effective. Read the instructions on the specific pepper spray that you are using and be aware of the range that it covers when it sprays. Try it at home a few times to get a feel of the range that it has.

- Aim: It is also important that you aim the pepper spray right at the face and particularly at the eyes of the attacker. Though the pepper spray will cause a fair amount of pain when it comes in contact with the skin, it may not have the best effect if the entire spray lands on thick jeans of the attacker. An attack directed at the eyes is most effective while one on the face shall also cause you to make your escape effectively.

- Practice: Even though practice alone will not help in making the right move at the right time, it is essential to ensure that you pull out the pepper spray easily and smoothly so as to take the assailant by surprise. It is essential that you do not get surprised yourself with the effect that the pepper spray has on the attacker and concentrate on making your escape as soon as you have sprayed the pepper spray. If the pepper spray has been used effectively, your attacker is likely to gag, start coughing violently and itch. He is also likely to be in a fair amount of pain due to the pepper spray. Make sure that you do not react to the situation and make a dash for it while you can. Even though the effects of the pepper spray last for a few minutes, it is important that you put as much distance between yourself and the attacker and try and reach an area that is populated with other people or reach out for some help.
