I often receive questions about whether the iPad clones (like the iPed, aPad, ePed, etc.) are capable of doing word processing and whether they do it well or if this is an easy task. According to a survey of UK iPad owners put forth by Cooper Murphy Webb, people who own iPads are now using them as their preferred device for reading newspapers, magazines and books. Of the 1,034 iPad owners polled via telephone between July 28th and August 10th, 43% use the iPad for more than 10 hours per week, with most of those usage hours taking place in home.

While the iPad dominates among users  for text based activities like perusing magazines and books, the laptop still holds strong  as a primary entertainment device — perhaps due to the iPad’s lack of Flash support. I know that I have been discouraged from readily picking up an iPad to watch online video from the Pavlovian effect of those disappointing little blue legos.

Giving ammunition to the “iPad Will Save Reading” camp, 31% of iPad users prefer their iPad to their laptop, mobile phone, e-reader and print media for reading newspapers and magazines, perhaps due to the innovative presentation of news put forward by aggregator iPad apps like Flipboard and Pulse.

And moreover 41% of iPad owners prefer the iPad for reading books, which bodes well for iPad apps like iBooks, Kindle for iPad, and  Barnes and Noble.

As a side note to and probably as a byproduct of text consumption, the iPad is also preferred for Internet browsing among UK owners at 38% and gaming at 37% respectively.

From a technology and entrepreneur standpoint, this presents an amazing opportunity for new authors to build and expand their audience, as well as provide new revenue streams to support their love for writing. Publishing a book on these devices can happen in a variety of different ways.

·         Longer development time

2)      Submit to an Existing E-book Application

One option for self-publishing is to create a custom e-book application that can be distributed on an e-reader device. There are three main brands of e-readers on the market, and a fourth if you include the iBookstore for the iPad. These include the Kindle Reader by Amazon, the Nook by Barnes & Noble, and the Sony E-Reader (multiple varieties).

The benefit to this approach is that each of these devices also has an application that allows the e-books to be purchased and read on a variety of different devices including smartphones, other tablets, and on desktop/laptop computers.

While these all have their own nuances and benefits, here is a quick breakdown of some of the good and bad to this option. In general, this is a great “low commitment” option that has almost no start-up costs, and is perfect for the hobby writer. There are also other online self-publishing options that do not exactly fit into this category, such as Lulu.com or Smashwords.com which may also be worthwhile as they provide many of these same types of services.

Advantages to using an existing marketplace application

·         Generally quick and easy to format a manuscript and get it into the store
·         Quick compatibility across multiple devices
·         “Organic” visibility as people browse the store
·         Generally free to submit a manuscript, so no upfront costs
·         Freedom to choose your own pricing, with some exceptions
·         Excluding Apple’s iBookstore, other e-bookstores work on almost all platforms, including most types of smartphones, e-readers, tablets, and desktop/laptop computers

Disadvantages

·         Higher commission – You make less from each sale
·         Still need to self market, or pay for marketing, however it is a bit easier because the market owners (Amazon, Sony, Barnes & Noble, and Apple) are all very well trusted retailers
·         Some content restrictions, fewer customization options
·         In most cases, no copy protections or DRM control options
·         Some distribution restrictions limiting your freedom to sell on other platforms or in other formats
·         Not as easy to publish graphic-heavy books, such as comics and graphic novels

3)      Host Your Works Online

A third option is to host your content online in a format that is optimized for mobile app devices such as e-readers, smartphones, and tablets. This option can include free or paid distributions methods, meaning that a person would need to purchase the document before being able to access it. Once purchased, the file could be downloaded and accessed by the user, similar to other e-commerce and digital distribution systems.

Custom or semi-custom website development options are available from a large variety of developers, as well as template sites that have limited configuration options, which can fit most hosting needs and budgets.

Advantages

·         Easier to provide preview or demo content
·         Full editorial control with no content restrictions (except for illegal content, of course)
·         Generally cheaper than creating an application
·         Easier to promote all your works in one place, as well as promote yourself
·         Advanced analytics and sales tracking
·         Easy to add new content and works
·         Can be deployed in conjunction with the above options
·         Full price control, no commissions (unless you specifically choose to)

Disadvantages

·         More difficult to market and promote to an external audience
·         More expensive than piggy-backing on other e-book stores
·         Higher ongoing hosting costs, and pay management
·         Some device compatibility restrictions on format
·         Ongoing IT or tech support may be necessary
·         Less control and prevention against redistribution

Summary:

There are lots of options for self-publishing, and each may appeal to a different level of writer and artist. In general, piggy-backing into existing apps may be an ideal place to start for hobby writers, since no upfront investment is needed, although the payback is less.

For more serious and ambitious self-publishing writers, creating a proprietary app for each of your works, or selling your works independently online may be a more ideal choice. In either case, self-publishing can be challenging and very rewarding.

I am new in DSLR world and made a lot of research before deciding on the D90 about three months ago. All I can say is that I was satisfied with the ease of use and image quality. One feature that I am particularly pleased about this camera is equipped with two rings is the separate control for AP and shooting. This saves time and helps to minimize confusion on this Newby. All in all it was pretty easy to learn. There are many options to customize controls and adjust the exposure. I need the car for a long time.

I would have given a 5-star review, except videos. I know it’s a camera and use it for 99.9% of the time. Nikon, but advertised as being able to shoot HD video. I have problems with any of the restrictions, but that is supposed to be HD, and I have seen close to HD quality than anything as yet. I would give 4 1 / 2 stars if I could.

I do not have much to add on camera. And ‘star. The image quality and dynamic range is excellent.

But a reviewer in the comments might be worth the wait for the replacement D90, which appears again in the fall (or maybe later). There is a strong expectation for not picking up the D90 now. First, the price can not really go down that much after the launch of the sequel. D90 as the D40 is a milestone in camera that will probably continue to be required even after his official life is over. The D40, which in turn was interrupted for several months, is currently being sold by different sellers on Amazon for a couple hundred more than last official MSRP. It ‘simply a function of supply and demand, and the same can be expected for the D90 over time because of how highly regarded. Second, while a new model usually desirable new features – and there is no reason to think the D90 replacement will not be improvements over the D90, especially in terms of video capability – it can be worth waiting for the hype to launch subside, take some deep review, and wait for firmware updates first.

In short, the D90 is a great camera, no matter what comes after. Except in the most advanced video capabilities is a must-have, no reason to miss shooting with D90 now.

The controller handles the block mode access that is inherent with NAND flash RAM and performs functions such as wear- leveling, to make sure all the blocks of the flash RAM chip get equal usage. This is important because there is a limit on the no: of  times that NAND can be written to and if data copied to it always used the same blocks first ,those blocks would wear out faster , rendering the whole chip useless before some of the blocks have been used much, if at all.

           The PCB will also have an oscillator, providing a clock signal to control data transfer operations, and usually an LED, sometimes two, which can show the activity status of the flash drives. The LED act as a warning that device is in use as unplugging it without unmounting can damage the drive beyond repair.
